For the first time in the franchise's 130 season's of play, San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain accomplished something done by no other player. With 27 batters up and 27 batters down and "zero" numbers reaching base, Cain last night became the first player in Giants franchise history, and only the 9th pitcher in National League history to throw a "perfect" game. In the process of beating Houston 10-0, Cain needed 125 pitches to strikeout a career-high 14 batters, and keep all Houston hitters from recording a hit. Cain's 14 K's tied the Dodgers Sandy Koufax for most strikeouts in a perfect game. Cain's perfect performance also marked the first no-hitter of his seven year career with San Francisco. The Giants brought him up to the big leagues in 2005 and he's been with the team ever since. He holds a 75-75 won/lost record since his MLB debut with an ERA of 3.31 with 1,158 strikeouts. Cain's also one of baseball's hottest pitchers this season winning his last seven starts.
Like most perfect games, Cain had help from his defense. His outfielders and infielders made several spectacular plays late in the game to preserve his "perfect" game.
The 2012 baseball season is still young, yet we've had five no-hitters through the first two and a half months dating back to opening day, including four "perfect" games. It may become understandable if baseball fans become a bit "blase" about no-hit games. What Cain did last night was special even in that context. He turned in one of the most dominant nine-inning performances in major league history. His won/lost record this season is 8-2, with a 2.18 ERA, the later the second best mark in the National League and third-best in the majors. He also leads the majors in both innings (95) and innings per start (7.3) among qualified pitchers. The Giants at the start of this season gave Matt Cain a $127.5 million dollar contract extension through 2017 with a one year option for 2018. Cain will be just 32 in the final year of that deal, 33 his option year, and with a little more than a third of the way through year one, he's been the best pitcher in baseball.
Last nights perfect game elevates Cain into the company of pitchers like Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, pre-injury Kerry Wood and modern day super-stars like his teammate, two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum who many baseball analyst say kept Cain in the shadows. With Lincecum suffering through a disastrous season, Cain has emerged as the Giants ace. Last nights perfect game moved San Francisco within 3 1/2 games of first place in the NL West Division.
Since joining the Giants in August of 2005 as a 20 year old, Cain's become a two-time All-Star pitcher and was a member of the 2010 World Series Champion Giants. One West Coast sport reporter said it best after last nights game. "Sometimes the perfect game is bigger than the pitcher that threw it. But, not in this case." In his career, Matt Cain has thrown two one hitters, and one other two-hitter, and held hitters to low batting average on balls in play, and Cain was beginning to have the look of a pitcher for whom it was just a matter of time. Last night was Matt Cain's time. He seized the moment and made MLB and Giant baseball history. Now maybe he's out of Tim Lincecum shadow for good.............
