Last night the Boston Celtics went down in defeat in Game 7 of their semi-finals against the Miami Heat but they did it with "style." In last night's do-or-die game Boston stayed neck and neck with the younger Heat players and by the start of the 4th quarter of play it was tied at 75-75. A sell out crowd of mostly Heat fans showing great discipline not to shout too loudly in fear of motivating Celtic players to kick their play into a higher gear. They showed the Celtics great respect during the entire game. Even in the 4th quarter as their Heat Big Three stars turned up their play a notch, Heat fans still didn't take delight in watching their home team edge ahead of Boston. I've watched many basketball games, regular season and playoff games but what Heat fans did last night in the closing minutes of play showed just how much respect they had for the Celtics. With their home team Miami Heat, dominating the floor action Heat fans began chanting, "Let's Go Celtics", over-and-over, and continued it until after the game was over, and the Celtic players had left the floor.
Last nite at the American Airlines arena in Miami it reminded me just what being a Celtic fan is all about, and why when people talk about Celtic pride and spirit, it's taken so seriously, and felt so deeply. Miami Heat fans stood as one last night and paid tribute to a great collection of NBA stars, players, that wear the green of the Boston Celtics. They lost last night, but they won as well. They again won the admiration of sport fans inside the arena last night and world-wide.
I'm reminded of two quotes made by people connected to the sports world. One a great player, the other a sportswriter.
The player was asked by reporters why he had so much success playing in the NBA. He replied, "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, lost almost 300 games, missed the winning shot 26 times, I've failed over-and-over in my life - "THAT IS WHY I SUCCEEDED!" (Michael Jordan )
The second quote that's stayed with me was spoken by one of America's greatest sportswriters. "When the Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, he writes not that you "won" or "lost" but how you played the game!" (Grantland Rice)
Last night fans in that Miami basketball arena stood and cheered for a team, a franchise, a group of players wearing the Green of the Boston Celtics for the way they "PLAY THE GAME!"
The Celtics made it a heck of a series. Three straight wins after getting down 0-2 is huge. Doc Rivers and team hold your heads up high. You displayed "Celtic Pride" at its finest. Even Miami Heat fans, hungry and anxious to celebrate a long awaited Game 7 NBA win, stopped to pay tribute to a deserving bunch of elite athletes. A tip of the Celtic's hat to Heat fans for recognizing Boston's efforts
The Boston "CELTIC PRIDE" - on display every time they set foot on a basketball court..........
(wait till next year!)
