What happened in Egypt Wednesday night is "sickeningly" familiar for the game of soccer. Now, some in the country are saying "politics" are to blame. Others say, in the Arab World rioting, burning stadiums, and "killing," one of few outlets left to vent their frustrations about "life" under autocratic leaders. Many say the violence was planned. Egypt's undergoing political transition. Witnesses said rioters were armed with knives. Hospital and police officials say many of the 74 deaths, and hundreds of injuries, were caused by "stabbing's." Suggesting police and stadium officials did not conduct careful searches and bag checks common at matches in Europe. Today, thousands of angry sport fans marched on the Egyptian Interior Ministry building in Cairo demanding for the ouster of the military-appointed interim government. Egypt has declared three days of mourning for riot victims. This latest soccer disaster, be it for political reason's, or simply because a team won or lost, begs the question, "WHY DOES THIS SPORT PROVOKE SO MUCH DEATH, DESTRUCTION, AND VIOLENCE?"

Here's a "small" sample of major disaster's in soccer stadiums around the world.

May 1964 - Peru - Minutes from the final whistle a referee disallows a Peruvian goal leading to an Argentina win. Local fans rioted. Violence killed 318 people, injures more than 500.

January 1971 - Scotland - Match between Rangers & Celtic in Glasgow. Fans leaving stadium causes a stairway collapse killing 66, injuring hundreds, including children. Bodies stacked as deep as six feet.

October - 1982 - Russia- Leaving a UEFA Cup game, fans are "crushed"leaving the Moscow stadium. Russian officials place a news black-out and tragedy goes years before it becomes public knowledge. Officials say death toll was 66, witnesses say more than 350 were killed.

May - 1985 - England - Fire breaks out in the stands during a game at Bradford,England. 56 people killed.

May - 1985 - Belgium - Rioting before the European Cup final causes the deaths of 35 fans.

March - 1988 - Nepal - Fans fleeing a sudden hailstorm at stadium trample fans and kill almost 100, injuring hundred's.

April - 1989 - England - At the English FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool & Nottingham, a crowd "surge" crushes packed fans against barriers and 96 were killed, hundreds injured. It was Britain's worst sporting disaster.

May - 2001 - Ghana - At the end of a soccer match in Ghana tens of thousand of fans rush to leave. Police fired tear-gas at fans tearing up seats. 126 people are killed in the chaos. Hundreds, and hundreds injured. It remains one of Africa's worst soccer disaster.

We've never had a major riot, or soccer disaster in this country. The closest we came was at Miami's Orange Bowl in February of 2000. Peru was playing Honduras in the Gold Cup finals. More than 32,000 soccer fans crowded into the famous Orange Bowl. In the final minute of the game with Peru leading, a Honduras goal was called back because of being off side. In anger the Honduras player kicked the soccer ball into the stands. When the referee tossed him out of the game Honduras fans went crazy. Hundreds raced on the field and a riot broke out. Police quickly put down the riot, more than 40 fans were arrested. If your planning to attend a major soccer game in the future, be very careful. "SOCCER IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH!"
