America's Bloodiest Sport - "POLITICS"............

Posted on 01/23/2012 @ 01:27 PM

Present day politics appears to be America's "bloodiest" sport. Attacks, smears of political candidates, on the right, and left, the targets. Millions of dollars spent on television commercials that reveal opponents "indiscretions." It doesn't seem to matter if the alleged "indiscretion" is based on truth, gossip, or simple hear-say. It doesn't matter if the story's new, or years old, it need only reveal a candidate's "poor judgement." When did this "dirtier" side of modern politics begin? Political historians say it began with the Kennedy run against Humphrey in the Democratic primary race of 1960. The Kennedy machine spent vast sums of money smearing the likable Senator from Minnesota. By the time they reached West Virginia Hubert Humphrey had been portrayed as a draft-dodger for not serving in the military,( in truth, Humphrey was too ill to fight in the war) plus his wife was portrayed as "homely" and "old fashioned." While the Kennedy machine portrayed their man as the "naval war hero", with a "glamorous wife", the kids, the homespun family with "little sailing boats." The Kennedy family was far from being a "homespun" family sitting in front of the fire place sipping hot chocolate. The public in 1960 was sold an "IMAGE." An Image they bought and elevated Kennedy to the Presidency.

Our media has been selling us an "image" since Obama's election. Mainstream media holding a "love-fest" with the man from Chicago before, and after becoming President. News outlets attempting to provide non-bias, balanced newscast are attacked as frequently as Republicans. Last week in South Carolina, CNN, considered part of that liberal media that supports the President heard from American voters that they are tired of "smears" and "dirty politics." CNN opened the debate with a question directed at former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. The question was "personal" involving his ex-wife. A question aired out years ago in the media. A question as "old" and "cold" as yesterday's chicken soup. It was clearly a question to "smear" the Speaker. He was being "baited" by CNN. Gingrich turned the tables on the debate's moderator CNN's John King. He gave King a lesson in history and a tongue lashing that brought the audience to their feet. Newt Gingrich received a standing ovation. If anyone ever had any doubts about CNN political bias it was removed the moment CNN John King asked his question.

I believe it also signals that the American voters are fed up, tired of smear campaigns. Tired of "dirty" politics and if you wish to play that game you do at your own peril. Actually it reminded me of scenes from the 1976 movie "NETWORK." A 1976 satirical film about an "old" worn out anchorman, Howard Beale, who's just been told he's being replaced on the evening newscast because of bad ratings. Depressed, when he goes on his next newscast, before ending his newscast he announces that on "Tuesday" night he will "commit suicide" on the newscast. Make sure you watch. Tell your friends to watch. Local papers and other media outlets pick up the story and hype his up-coming "suicde" newscast. By "Tuesday" ratings for his newscast are through the roof. He doesn't kill himself but rather he unleashes one impassioned diatribe persuading viewers to open their windows and shout, "I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE." All over the city, windows opened and people shouted his words. Last week, people in South Carolina opened their windows and "shouted" Howard Beale's words. Main street Liberal media better heed those words. Politicians, regardless of party affiliation, be they on the right, left, or in the middle, better heed Beale's words.

American's deserve better than smears, dirt, and dirty politics perpetuated by political opportunists and media giants. Politics may be America's Bloodiest Sport, but, voters want the bleeding to stop "NOW.".
